Zille hints at hurting ANC if Cilliers Brink is not returned as Tshwane mayor

Democratic Alliance (DA) federal chairperson Helen Zille has “threatened” to hurt the African National Congress (ANC) if Cilliers Brink is not reinstated as Tshwane mayor.

The City of Tshwane council is expected to elect a mayor on Wednesday, 9 October, following Brink’s ousting via a motion of no confidence on 26 September.

WILL CILLIERS BRINK BE REINSTATED AS TSHWANE MAYOR?

Following Brink’s ousting, ActionSA leader Herman Mashaba said they would field the current deputy mayor Nasiphi Moya from his party as he feels that she is a better candidate compared to all the other councillors in the metro. However, the ANC will reportedly field its former chairperson in Tshwane Kgosi Maepa who currently serves as Lesufi’s advisor.

In addition, Mashaba said they would support an ANC mayoral candidate depending on who it is.

The DA had said that it would field Brink again.

The ANC was expected to meet on Monday, 7 October, to deliberate about the future of Tshwane and Gauteng premier Panyaza Lesufi was also summoned to Luthuli House, the party’s headquarters over his “anti-GNU” remarks. In the mix, Zille blamed Lesufi for Brink’s ousting and called for him to be fired.

DA THREATENS TO PULL OUT OF STABILITY PACT

Speaking to Newzroom Afrika, on Tuesday morning Helen Zille said the ANC hasn’t responded to her about whether or not they will support Brink on Wednesday.

“This shows just how divided they are internally. If the ANC doesn’t come back to me it shows they can’t reach an agreement,” she said.

Zille said there won’t be a stability pact unless Cilliers Brink is reinstated as the mayor of Tshwane.

The ANC and the DA were engaging on a pact to stabilise metro municipalities across the country including Nelson Mandela Bay.

The ANC is expected to brief the media on Tuesday afternoon about the outcome of the national working committee’s meeting.
