The New York Yankees staved off elimination in the Bronx Tuesday night, beating the Los Angeles Dodgers 11-4 in Game 4 of the World Series.
The Dodgers jumped out to an early lead in the top of the first inning when Freddie Freeman launched a two-run homer to right field, making him the first player to go deep in the first four games of a World Series. Freeman’s historic run began with his walk-off grand slam in the 10th inning of Game 1 at Dodger Stadium.
Freeman also became the lone player to homer in six straight World Series games — a streak dating back to the 2021 championship he won with the Atlanta Braves.
Dodgers pitching, which had kept New York’s potent offense in check to date, couldn’t hold on.
Yankees shortstop Anthony Volpe’s grand slam in the third inning gave New York a 5-2 lead at the time.
The Bronx Bombers would add six more runs, including a three-run homer from Gleyber Torres in the eighth inning, to seal the victory and send the best-of-seven series to a Game 5 on Wednesday night at Yankee Stadium.
A bizarre scene unfolded in the bottom of the first inning when Dodgers right fielder Mookie Betts leaped at the wall in foul territory and initially caught Gleyber Torres’ pop fly. A fan in the first row with a gray Yankees’ road jersey grabbed Betts’ glove with both hands and yanked the ball out.
Torres was called out on fan interference, and the fan was promptly ejected from the stadium.
