World Teachers’ Day theme 2024: “Respecting the voices of teachers: towards a new social contract for education”. This theme is dedicated to the dialogue about challenges faced by teachers and their profession, taking advantage of their expertise and knowledge in order to improve the education system.
The history of World Teachers’ Day relates to a special intergovernmental conference held in 1966, which adopted the UNESCO/ILO Recommendation on the Status of Teachers in Paris. Through this recommendation, it defines the rights and duties of teachers. Since 1994, World Teachers’ Day has been celebrated on the 30th anniversary of that conference. Since then, this day is observed every year to honor teachers and appreciate their contribution to society uniquely.
Involving the voices of teachers in education policies will be special sessions. Other events, such as celebration through keynote addresses, discussion forums for the conditions of teachers, and other events like the UNESCO-Hamdan Prize, which rewards the individual and institutions who have done exceptional work in the domain of teacher development, constitute part of the celebrations.
