World Polio Day falls every year on October 24. The day is observed to diminish the polio threat and create awareness about it. On the day, health organizations such as WHO, Rotary International, UNICEF, and the Foundation establish many events, drives for vaccination, and educational programs.
Polio is a highly infectious disease mainly affecting young children. It is brought about by the poliovirus which, in extreme cases, can lead to paralysis and even death, as it could penetrate even into the brain and spinal cord. Jonas Salk created the inactivated poliovirus vaccine in 1955, which became one of the major breakthroughs against the disease. Many years later, Albert Sabin came up with the oral polio vaccine in 1961.
In the year 1988, World Health Assembly resolved to eliminate polio and, by the time it had taken this decision, there were around 3,50,000 cases worldwide. Since the time of taking the resolution, cases of polio have declined by 99%, and most countries approached closer to the goal of being declared polio-free.
India was declared polio-free by WHO in 2014 also though there are some corners where polio cases come up. IPV has been added in routine immunization programs of Indian government, thus, increasing immunity in children.
Polio virus: The spread is majorly faecal-oral route. It enters the human body through contaminated water or food items. The growth takes place in the intestines and then it enters the nervous system.
World Polio Day is an attempt to heighten polio awareness, which would help in the final step of eradication. The day reminds us that polio will be eradicated only through solidarity by the whole world and through continuous efforts to keep all children up-to-date with their vaccinations.
