Why Zimbabwe is keeping tabs on Kaizer Chiefs’ Chivaviro

Zimbabwe’s national soccer team is keeping tabs on Kaizer Chiefs striker Ranga Chivaviro.

The 31-year-old has shown form this season, scoring two league goals in three appearances so far for the Glamour Boys. With Bafana Bafana possessing quality forwards such as Lyle Foster, Percy Tau, Khanyisa Mayo and Iqraam Rayners, it looks unlikely that the Amakhosi could break into the SA national team.

Chivaviro, who was born in South Africa, is also eligible to play for Zimbabwe’s national football team. He was born to a South African mother and a Zimbabwean mother making him eligible to play for both countries.

Zimbabwe’s national football coach Michael Nees addressed the possibilities of Chivaviro playing for them.

“We have a long list of players, we are interested in every good player,” he told the media.

“But we also have good players here. We observe everybody and when the time is right, we will decide whether to approach him or not. It’s not just because someone is playing at Kaizer Chiefs.

“We observe every player but we must also praise our players who are here, they played very well today and they scored three goals,” Nees added.

“We have a long list, and it’s not just that we have to bring in but we must add value. That doesn’t mean I underrate his quality right now.

“He had a very good time when he was at his club before Kaizer Chiefs, he started the season on a very high note. We will look [at him],” Nees said.

If Ranga Chivaviro switches to Zimbabwe, he might play against Bafana in next year’s World Cup qualifiers.
