Washington man charged with breaking and entering, two dogs left dead after being shot by Trooper

PITT COUNTY, N.C. (WNCT) — On Saturday morning, deputies with the Pitt County Sheriff’s Office were called to a breaking and entering of a vehicle in progress on Clark’s Neck Road in Washington.

A North Carolina State Highway Patrol Trooper was in the area conducting an unrelated investigation and was able to respond. When the Trooper arrived on the scene, he reported seeing two Belgian Malinois dogs attacking a man, the suspect, on the scene. The dogs got off the man and began running at the Trooper aggressively. The Trooper then shot and killed both dogs.

The man breaking into the car was identified as 43-year-old Kevin Bryan Toler. Following an investigation of the complaint and interviewing witnesses, it was concluded that Toler had broken into the victim’s vehicle, attempted to break into the nearby residence of a different victim and had assaulted the owner of the car.

Toler was arrested and charged with the following crimes:

  • Felony break/ enter motor vehicle
  • Attempted breaking or entering of building
  • Misdemeanor assault on a female.

Toler was transported to the Pitt County Detention Center where he was denied bond.
