Walmart says ‘it’s here to help’ after shopper ‘spends $100’ but encounters payment method hurdle at checkout

A WALMART shopper couldn’t hide their frustration following what seemed to be an expensive trip to the store.

They were stopped in their tracks after claiming they couldn’t pay for items using contactless services.

Walmart CEO Doug McMillon hasn’t ruled out the supermarket giant partnering up with Apple[/caption]

Reb revealed he forked out $100 on an Uber while taking a vacation in Anaheim, California.

But he ended up with nothing following the saga that unfolded inside the supermarket.

“What store in 2024 doesn’t have contactless payment methods?” he asked on X.

He tagged Walmart in the social media post and received a reply from a spokesperson.

They said they were “here to help” and offered a contactless payment method to Reb.

“Give Walmart Pay a try, it’s a hands-free form of paying,” they said.

But Reb appeared to point out a flaw with the service, claiming that it doesn’t work for non-Americans.

Walmart Pay is an in-house tool designed by supermarket bosses to make paying for goods easier.

Shoppers can attach their credit and debit cards to digital wallets, so it means they don’t have to fumble around at the checkout.

Customers can use their cell phones when paying for items.

Shoppers scan a QR code on the PIN pad and this transmits a signal, verifying the purchase.

Once customers buy their items, their receipt is uploaded to the store app.

Walmart has reassured users by saying that customers’ card details are not transferred to the store they are in.

Why doesn’t Walmart offer Apple Pay?

CEO of Walmart Doug McMillon has revealed why stores don’t offer Apple Pay on Stratechery with Ben Thompson.

Though using Apple Pay at the retailer has been an ongoing conversation, McMillon emphasized that “We would like to have the customers open our app in the store all the time.”

The app can be used to help find items in the store, but it can also be used to pay for your purchases.

“That’s one of the things that we would like people to use our app for,” he said.

However the retail chain has come under fire over the payment methods available to shoppers.

Walmart is one of the few retailers that does not allow shoppers to pay for goods via Apple Pay.

The Home Depot is also a major name on the relatively short list of chains.

Walmart CEO Doug McMillon has not ruled out rolling out the Apple Pay option across the chain’s portfolio of stores.

McMillon told Stratechery that conversations with the tech giant are ongoing.

It doesn’t appear the chain will making the change any time soon.

“Maybe we will at one point,” the exec replied when probed on whether there could be a partnership.

However, he stressed that he likes customers to use the Walmart store app.

Not all shoppers have welcomed the lack of Apple Pay when shopping at Walmart.

One shopper urged the chain to embrace the 21st century while another fumed that Walmart is “too big” not to allow customers to use Apple Pay.
