VWSD Police Chief Dewayne Sims Sr. is retiring after twenty years of service

Vicksburg Daily News –

VICKSBURG, MS – After twenty years of service Dewayne Sims Sr., Police Chief of the Vicksburg-Warren School District (VWSD), is retiring. The retirement was officially announced at the Vicksburg Warren School District board meeting on Thursday night. Sims replacement has not been announced.

“It was my session and the time was right,” Sims said. “Everything has an expiration date and nothing last forever not even greatness.”

After receiving his bachelors degree in Communication Broadcast Journalism from Alcorn State University, Sims followed a winding career path as a surveillance observer/investigator for the gaming industry, an enforcement agent with Mississippi Gaming Commission, and as a Narcotics Officer with the Vicksburg Police Department, before stepping in to the role as Police Chief of the Vicksburg-Warren School District in 2004. During his tenure with the school district, Sims earned his Master’s Degree in Public Administration/Human Resources .

In Sims twenty years as the VWSD Police Chief, he has found his role working directly with the students to be the most rewarding. He has seen students graduate, start families of their own, and have children in school, all while remembering his words of encouragement.He leaves a legacy of keeping students safe, whether on campus or school related events.

“I will always remember the people I served, he said. “It was never about me, It was always about cultivating the youth and making sure my great team and I help students become college and career ready by ensuring the environment is safe and conducive for learning.”

Sims has not publicly announced any future plans after his retirement but he mentioned that he will continue to serve.
