Vicksburg Daily News –

Vicksburg High School football team went on the road to face Callaway and fell short 20-14 on Thursday.

The Gator defense forced a three and out on the opening drive to gain possession of the ball. DeCorey Knight Jr. took the majority of handoffs during their opening drive as he picked up a first down but VHS was still forced to punt.

Late in the first quarter, the Gators punted the ball to the 50 and the Chargers returned it for a touchdown but a penalty placed them at the 28-yard line. A few plays later Callaway ran it in for a 15-yard touchdown. A failed two-point conversion gave Callaway a 6-0 lead.

Late in the second quarter, Thomas Hardiman laid two hard hits in a row which forced Callaway to punt. The Gators went back to their run game but with Cedric Blackmore, as he picked up some good yards but eventually VHS were forced to punt the ball away.

Just shortly before halftime, the Gators took a safety that gave Callaway the 8-0 lead midway through the game.

Coming out of halftime a fumble by Knight gave the Chargers possession of the ball. Callaway eventually got down the field and picked up a 3-yard score to go up 14-0.

Late in the second half, the Gators got on the board when Knight broke out for a 47-yard touchdown run to put the score at 14-6. It didn’t take long for the Chargers to respond as they picked up a 62-yard touchdown run to secure a 20-6 lead.

Just when Callaway thought they had some breathing room, Knight scored again from an 80-yard kick return along with a successful two-point conversion from Blackmore to put things at 20-14.

Although the Gators fought to the end, they couldn’t manage to grab another score as they fell short 20-14.
