VHS fell short to Neshoba Central on homecoming night

Vicksburg High School football team fell short in a 31-21 loss to Neshoba Central on Friday.

The Rockets got the first ten points on the board after an early field goal and a 40-yard pick 6 as they went up 10-0. The Gators responded by pounding the ball with DeCorey Knight Jr. in the wildcat offense. Cedric Blackmore took in the 3-yard touchdown.

Late in the first quarter, with stops by Dennis Battle, Cameron Nailor, Jordan Clay, Stephen Anderson, and Mincer Minor IV, the Gators were able to gain possession of the ball.

VHS started the second quarter with Knight taking the handoffs, including picking up 17 yards on a run. The Gators made their way down after a 12-yard pass by Jamikal Maxey while Knight managed to spin his way to the 1-yard line. With 1:30 left in the half, Knight ran in the short touchdown to give the Gators the 14-10 lead after Abel Gonzalez’s successful extra point.

The second half belonged to the Rockets as they powered through with their run game. They scored 17 unanswered points which included a 15-yard touchdown pass, a field goal, and a touchdown run.

Knight broke out on a few long runs late in the game which set up a short touchdown run by Blackmore as time expired. Gonzalez went 3 for 3 in extra points.

The Gators are now 0-6 on the year and they will host Warren Central on Friday.
