Updates of Local Sports Recovering from Hurricane Helene

The effects of Hurricane Helene will be felt for some time. However, there are beginnings of normalcy starting to show on the local sports scene.

Many high schools in the Hickory Metro are taking a day-to-day approach. With all schools in the Hickory Metro out again on Tuesday, many high schools are opting to have voluntary practices as players are available to safely get to schools. Several fall sports programs may be able to resume play again as early as Tuesday.

The high school football schedule will likely be shuffled significantly for the remainder of the season in some parts of the Hickory Metro. The latest updates for the games of week six now include:

Maiden vs. West Lincoln, Wednesday, 7pm
Newton-Conover at Lincolnton, Wednesday, 7:30pm
Hickory vs. North Lincoln, Wednesday, 7pm

The following games have not been rescheduled:
Draughn hosting Avery County, ppd.
Bandys at East Burke, ppd.
Bunker Hill now hosting West Caldwell, ppd.
Fred T. Foard at West Iredell, ppd.

Of particular note are the schools of the Northwestern 3A/4A Conference. Those schools include, Alexander Central, Freedom, Hibriten, South Caldwell, along with Ashe County and Watauga. The athletic directors of these schools are scheduled to meet on Tuesday to discuss athletics going forward. Freedom’s football and baseball fields were flooded by the Catawba River overflowing it’s banks, while Ashe and Watauga Counties are some of the hardest hit by the storm. Currently, Ashe County High School is staged as an emergency shelter for the county.

Caldwell Community College and Technical Institute announced on Sunday that the Cobras volleyball game against Guilford Tech on Tuesday had been postponed.

Lenoir-Rhyne men’s golf was scheduled to compete at Lander University’s Bearcat Fall Classic at The Preserve at Verdae in Greenwood, SC. That tournament was cancelled. Volleyball and women and men’s soccer are next scheduled to compete on Wednesday, with all events at home.

Appalachian State field hockey played Monday, but their home game was held at Davidson. The men’s golf team is competing in the Ironwood Collegiate Classic hosted by East Carolina in Greenville, NC. However, the schedule for all other fall sports is empty until Friday. App football is scheduled to play at Marshall on Saturday.

WHKY will keep you updated with local sports, as well as recovery efforts and more from the Hickory Metro.
