Underwater CAR GRAVEYARD where abandoned shells of 100s of classic motors are left to rot – & eerie reason why

HUNDREDS of classic motors have been dumped and left to rot in an underwater car graveyard.

The rotting shells of cars including a Ford Escort, Ford Fiesta and Morris Minor were found metres underwater at the disused Powmill Quarry last month.

The Scottish quarry was hiding a plethora of rusting cars[/caption]

The area, just off the A977, is blocked off by large boulders to stop fly-tippers, with rumours swirling the dumped cars were stolen.

It is not known exactly why they were left in the lake, but one scuba diving site suggests it could have been a hub of criminal activity.

They wrote: “This quarry appears to have been a dumping ground for stolen cars for many years – everything is in here from cars to bikes, caravans, a silvercross pram and a set of Post Office scales.

“The only thing that lets the site down is the entrance to the site has been blocked off by the local council to deter dumping and therefore is a 200 yard hike to get to waters edge.”

The footage shows a diver in full scuba kit checking out the underwater scene.

Using a GoPro the diver explored which cars were hidden beneath the water.

He spotted the first one tilted against a pile of abandoned rubbish and at least five rusting shopping carts.

Next to it was a rusted blue open top car with springs, baskets, and other household items scattered about.

In the front of the car you could see marine plants and algae wrapped inside the vehicle.

He then reached a rusty red motor that appeared to have working doors and was able to perch on the submerged seats.

It seemed to have the handbrake still on and a radio and CD player covered with bits of sea weed and moss, with the paint peeling off.

After a quick sit, the diver swam on and filmed countless disused vehicles, some upside down, others piled on top of each other.

One was a white Vauxhall resting on its roof and another had police tape tied to window.

The video, which was posted on the YouTube channel Dive Xplore, shared the footage to the diver’s 1.16k subscribers.

In the caption of the YouTube video he wrote: “See classic British cars underwater Including Mk 1 Ford Cortina, Mk 2 Ford Escort, Mk 2 Ford Fiesta XR2I, Vauxhall Cavalier SRI, Hillman Imp, Morris Minor car and van.

“Also a classic Japanese motorcycle and much more.”

The diver continued and spotted other lost goodies – a trophy stood on top of a car roof, what looked like an iPad, and even a gun.

After the 25 minute diving video the footage showed the explorer leaving the quarry, demonstrating how big the car graveyard really was.

The large quarry looked striking and if it wasn’t for the heavy littering it would be stunning, with high cliffs and rich greenery.

The area is owned by Devonshaw Leisure Ltd, a company that plans on completely revamping the quarry and turning into a leisure park.

This would include glamping pods and motorhome stations and accommodation, but locals are furious.

Many object based on environmental reasons and claim that the area is unsafe.

Devonshaw Leisure Ltd director Keith Davidson told Daily Record: “It’s the best site I’ve ever come across in whole career looking at somewhere for leisure.

“It’s absolutely gorgeous; like a piece of Utopia when you’re down in the quarry area.”
