Tito Mboweni’s ‘simple’ tombstone: ‘Like how he lived his life’

Tito Mboweni’s tombstone has been praised for its “simplicity,” with some even describing it to the way he lived he lived his life.

The former Minister of Finance and first black Reserve Bank Governor was buried in a state funeral on Saturday, 19 October, in Tzaneen, Limpopo.

During the service, his three sons, Sello, Pule, and Tumelo, shared a touching tribute to their father.

TITO MBOWENI TOMBSTONE REVEALED

In images posted on X, the tombstone erected for the late Tito Mboweni at the Bodweni Cemetary in Limpopo was revealed.

Unlike other flashy celebrity monuments, the one temporarily erected for the late minister featured a simple black stone with the details of Tito’s birth, death, and burial dates.

Many social media users were impressed by the unostentatious display, which they compared to the late minister’s lifestyle.

@Pricy_kat_Nyoni: “What a perfect tombstone for a down-to-earth human being. Rest in peace, Tito Mboweni.”

@FuzeMbuso: “Nothing fancy, just a simple tombstone for a simple human being he was. Great choice from the family.”

@Makhobane_16: “This looks like a humble instruction from the Duke himself.”

@emily_teffoME: “Glad they captured his real lifestyle. He didn’t like flashy and showing off.”

@nicknthala: “Just like he lived his life, simple.”

‘JUST GIVE ME A DECENT BURIAL’

According to an old tweet that recently resurfaced, Tito Mboweni requested that he be given a “decent burial when my time comes to go.”

And for the man known for wearing dusty old brown shoes and a leather jacket from the 1990s, this was achieved at his funeral service.

The former minister – who was known as a prolific businessman – was buried in the Mboweni family plot at the Bodweni Cemetary.  While President Cyril Ramaphosa and many other dignitaries were present, there was no pomp or pretentiousness for the man who nicknamed himself the “The Duke of Magoebaskloof.”

The president tweeted from his official X account: “Comrade Tito, you understood the assignment

“You were a true servant leader, admired and loved by the people. You delivered on what was required of you.”

He added: “You acquitted yourself with dignity and with honour in the ANC, in government, and beyond. You depart this world with that dignity, that honour, and that reputation intact.”
