Destin Harvest, a nonprofit food rescue organization, has distributed 1.9 million pounds of food across Okaloosa and Walton Counties so far in 2024, delivering meals to families struggling with food insecurity. Despite the perception of wealth in Destin, hunger remains a significant issue, with many families depending on donations from food pantries and shelters to make ends meet.

Led by Chris Leavenworth, Destin Harvest captures surplus food from major grocery stores like Sam’s Club, Walmart, and Publix, then delivers it to 40 nonprofit programs throughout the region. These programs range from church food pantries to after-school care centers, and they provide free meals to local families.

“There are a lot of working families struggling to stay afloat,” Leavenworth said, explaining the need for food assistance, even in seemingly prosperous areas like Destin. The organization works in Crestview, Fort Walton Beach, DeFuniak Springs, and other rural areas, distributing items such as frozen meats, bakery goods, and produce.

One of the more unusual challenges Destin Harvest has faced recently was distributing 20,000 pounds of uncooked rotisserie chicken, a donation from Sam’s Club. “Within a week, we had saturated the area,” Leavenworth said, highlighting the organization’s efforts to prevent food waste while helping those in need.

As the holidays approach, the organization is preparing for its busiest season. Destin’s Harbor Docks will once again host its annual free Thanksgiving meal, welcoming anyone in need or looking to volunteer. Leavenworth encouraged locals to get involved with Destin Harvest or other community organizations providing essential services.
