Storm Updated Provided By Hickory Metro Communities

Catawba County Officials have provided the following Tropical Storm Helene update. Multiple reports of downed trees and power lines, power outages and standing water have been received in Catawba County due to storm activity, resulting in sporadic road closures. Flooding is occurring in the Lookout Shoals area. Some structural damage to homes and vehicles has also been reported.

Officials are encouraging people to stay home until the storm passes and remain aware of conditions in their area. If people need to venture out, avoid flooded areas and driving through standing water. Catawba County offices are closed for the day Friday, September 27.

Catawba County is posting updates on our website, www.catawbacountync.gov, and on our Catawba County and Emergency Services Facebook pages.

Alexander County Officials Also released an update. As of 9 a.m., approximately 42 percent of Alexander County was experiencing a power outage due to Tropical Storm Helene. As of 9 a.m. Duke Energy had 3,608 customers without power, EnergyUnited – 5,035, and Blue Ridge Energy – 172. In addition, cell coverage is spotty in certain areas of the county. Non-essential Alexander County offices are closed for the day. Residents are highly encouraged to stay home if at all possible as emergency responders are extremely busy with downed trees and power lines.

In Alexander County, the following roads are closed in both directions: Lambert Fork Road, Robinette Road, Smith Grove Church Road, and Sulphur Springs Road. There are downed trees in many areas of the county, so please use extreme caution if you must travel.
