Six Inducted Into the VWSD Athletic Hall of Fame

Reginald Harris, Mark Smith, Emma Lee Wilson, Michael Carter, Dale Erves and Larry Erves were all inducted into the Vicksburg-Warren School District Athletic Hall of Fame. They were all recognized during halftime of the Vicksburg High vs. Warren Central football game.

Reginald Harris:
Reginald Harris was a 3-year starter at Vicksburg High School in football and baseball. Harris was the captain of Vicksburg High School’s 1984 district six championship football team and was a catalyst to their #4 ranking in the state of Mississippi. In 1985 he was the Thom McAnn award recipient for best scholar athlete in Warren County, and was a first team all-state participant on the football
squad. Reginald Harris led the football team in tackles his junior year with 130 and his senior year with 144. A frequent awardee of “Player of the Week” honors.

Harris was the 1984 Red Carpet Bowl’s “Most Valuable Defensive Player” and is a
member of the 1980’s All-Century team.

Mark Smith:

Mark Smith accounted for numerous awards throughout his time as s student-athlete in the Vicksburg Warren School District and at Vicksburg High School. All-Warren County, Most Outstanding Linebacker, Most Valuable Player, Best Offensive Player, Best Rebounder, and Player of the Week are just a few. A three
year letterman, Mark was a tenacious defensive player on the field for the
Vicksburg Gators.

Smith was named the Defensive MVP in the Coca-Cola All-Star Game and was a junior college player of the year in 1994. Following high school, Mark went on Hinds Community College and Auburn University. He was
later drafted in the 7th round by the NFL’s Arizona Cardinals, and finished his NFL.
career with the Cleveland Browns in 2002.

Emma Lee Wilson:

Emma Lee Wilson was an outstanding basketball player at Culkin Academy High
School from 1959 – 1962. Popularly known for her prolific scoring ability, Emma only played an entire game once due to her on-court dominance. That one entire game she did play in resulted in her scoring 83 points versus Port Gibson. Wilson was featured in Sports Illustrated and was invited to try out for the U.S. Girls’ Olympic team because of her extraordinary basketball talents.

Due to Wilson not seeing much of a future in women’s basketball at that time, she enlisted in the United States Marine Corp and served her country for 4 years. Ms. Wilson currently resides in the Vicksburg Convalescent Home and is represented tonight by her children.

Michael Carter:

Michael Carter’s baseball resume speaks for itself. A second baseman and shortstop for Warren Central High School, Carter played for the Vikings from 1985 – 1988. A multi-year letterman in baseball, football, and basketball, Carter amassed several accolades including Batting Champion, Outstanding Offensive
Player, All-County, and Team MVP. A 1988 preseason All-State Second Baseman, Carter helped lead Warren Central to its first Conference Title in baseball. Ranked 62nd in the United States by Baseball America, Michael was drafted in the 3rd round by the Milwaukee Brewers. Carter played professional
baseball from 1990 – 2002 in the positions of Shortstop and Outfield.

Dale Erves:

Dales Erves is a former football player at Warren Central High School and played
Running Back from 1973 – 1976. Accounting for 1,603 rushing yards and 12 touchdowns in 1975, Erves was a formidable force in the Viking backfield. In 1976, Dale was recognized as All Warren County, All-South Little Dixie Conference, and was a football team captain, Also in 1976, Erves rushed for 1,747 yards and 15 touchdowns. Voted Most Valuable Running Back’ of the South Little Dixie Conference, Erves finishes is high school career with 3,350 rushing yards on 579 carries, and amassed 27 touchdowns.

Larry Erves:

Larry Erves was known for his unique ability to play basketball at a high level. He attended Warren Central High School and played Forward while averaging 22 points per game. In 1972 and 1973 Larry was voted Most Valuable Player of the South Little Dixie Conference. He was also chosen as an All District Player in 1973. Other accomplishments for Erves included Most Valuable Player, Best Rebounder, and Team Captain. In 1974, Erves was selected as a member of the Mississippi High School North/South All Star Basketball Game.
