Car wizard Ron Krauch warned drivers to get prepared now before a winter takeover leaves drivers stuck behind layers of blinding frost.

As an automotive writer with 40 years of experience in the industry, he knows his stuff – including crucial checks that could save drivers $3,500 in repairs and the exact week to get the lowest price on a new car.

Krauch was raised in his dad’s mechanic shop and remembers working on his first car when he was just 6 years old.

He followed in his father’s footsteps and started working on cars at a young age before lending his expertise to industry leaders like Pontiac, Ford, and CarMax.

Now, in an exclusive conversation with The U.S. Sun Krauch is sharing his lifetime of expertise with curious drivers by explaining how to banish frost from windshields.

According to Krauch, the best tool is a cheap $5 to $10 scraper with a brush.

“Make sure to choose a sturdy one that won’t scratch the glass,” he said.

If you’re expecting heavy snowfall in the colder months, it might also be worth buying a windshield snow cover for between $10 and $25.

According to the expert, “It’s especially useful for avoiding morning scraping sessions.”

And finally, de-icing spray can melt build-up on windshields and handles with little to no effort.

Rauch said this product, which can cost just $5, contains alcohol or other chemicals that lower water’s freezing point and allow the ice to clear off quickly.

WINTER SECRETS

While winter may bring some seasonal difficulties for drivers, it’s actually a great time to shop for cars, according to Rauch.

He says the final week of the year is the best time to purchase from dealerships, as they’re looking to clear out the stockroom before January.

Plus, there’s less competition in the colder weather as drivers are less likely to get out of the house and browse lots.

However, to get the savings, drivers must walk in ready to bargain, knowing that dealers are ready to sell.

More winter car advice from AAA

The American Automobile Association shared advice on preparing your car for the winter months.

AAA gave the following tips for drivers getting ready for cold weather:

  • Get your brakes checked
  • Check tire pressure
  • Test your car’s battery
  • Apply water repellent to your windshield
  • Check antifreeze levels
  • Clean your headlights
  • Have emergency tools available like jumper cables, salt, and an ice scraper

According to the American Automobile Association, drivers should take several more steps before they’re ready to hit the roads this winter.

Brakes, tire pressure, antifreeze levels, and the car battery should all be in top shape and ready to face the icy temperatures.

Plus, drivers can apply water repellant to windshields to protect against snow and ice.

Headlights should be cleaned so cars can pierce through the foggy winter nights.

And finally, emergency tools like jumper cables, salts, and an ice scraper should always be in the trunk.
