Signs of autumn are finally in air as Bay Area sets for cooler weekend

Temperatures will continue to run cooler. Thick clouds will dot the upper and lower levels of the atmosphere. And in the northern most parts of the Bay Area, a little bit of rain is probably going to fall.

What a difference a week makes.

“No kidding,” National Weather Service meteorologist Alexis Clouser said Friday, as a cool, gray weekend beckoned a week after blazing, record-setting one. “It’s starting to feel a little bit more like fall and to look like it, too.”

In the far interior inland portions of the East Bay and the hottest spots of the South Bay, that means temperatures may top out at 80 degrees but more likely will stay in the high 70s, according to the weather service. Along the bay and coast, they the thermometer won’t get much past 70 degrees, if that.

“There is a chance that as we go into next week, there might be a slight uptick in the temperatures — very slight,” Clouser said. “There’s going to be a weak, short-wave ridge that could build, but it’s not going to be anything like what we saw. So the real hot stuff is behind us, at least for now.”

The cooler pattern is unlikely to bring any rain to Santa Clara, Alameda or Contra Costa counties, Clouser said, because a low-pressure trough that originated in the Gulf of Alaska is likely to pass north.

Instead, it will be parts of Sonoma and Napa County that get raindrops, she said. About one-tenth of an inch at most is expected to fall in most areas of Sonoma and Napa Counties, while cities higher up in those counties may get a quarter-inch.

“We’re not expecting a lot,” Clouser said. “We’re expected it to start falling in areas of Sonoma and Napa County very late (Friday), and then Marin County probably will get some in the first hours of Saturday.”

The rain is not expected to bring any lightning with it.

The skies “will dry out” during the early part of next week, she said.

“Temperatures will be very nice,” she said. “Overall, it should be very nice.”
