According to a report, Ruben Amorim could be in for a big pay rise if he agrees to become Manchester United’s next manager.

The Red Devils are in talks with Sporting CP’s manager to replace Erik ten Hag, who was relieved of his duties on Monday morning after a dismal start to the season.

Mail Sport revealed last week that Amorim was one of four targets if Ten Hag was dropped. His assistant Ruud van Nistelrooy has been given temporary charge but United quickly opened talks with Amorim and Sporting about activating the £8.5m release clause in his contract in Portugal.

According to talkSPORTthe 39-year-old could more than triple his current salary by completing a move to Old Trafford.

Amorim earns around £2.1m a year as Sporting boss, while his demands for a contract worth £7m a year during negotiations with West Ham last summer indicate he will manage much more in Manchester.

Amorim was interviewed earlier this year about the managerial vacancies at Liverpool and West Ham and is said to be open to a move to Old Trafford.

It is understood Amorim was planning to leave Sporting at the end of the season but was informed of United’s interest earlier this month and has had two rounds of talks.

Asked about ties with United after Ten Hag’s dismissal, he said on Monday: ‘I expected this question and I am obviously not going to talk about the future, otherwise I would always have to comment. I’m very proud to be a sports coach, that’s all.’

Amorim has led Sporting to two Portuguese league titles in his four years at the club.

As for the outgoing Ten Hag, Mail Sport revealed that sacking the Dutchman will cost United around £15 million. They activated a one-year contract extension in the summer after deciding not to recruit a replacement.

Ten Hag won the Carabao Cup in 2023 and the FA Cup earlier this year, two trophies he wanted to constantly remind people of when he was criticized.

In his first season he led United to third place in the Premier League, a marked improvement on the disastrous season before, in which they limped to sixth under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Ralf Rangnick.

However, they were unable to build on that success. United finished bottom of their Champions League group before recording their worst ever Premier League finish of eighth.
