Rivalry Week: VHS vs. WC Happening on Friday

Vicksburg Daily News –

VICKSBURG, MS – It’s officially rivalry week in the River City. The Vicksburg High School Gators will host the Warren Central High School Vikings in Friday night’s long standing rivalry.

The Gators vs. the Vikings is one of the oldest rivalry games in the state of Mississippi with the teams first facing off in 1981. The teams will go head-to-head in search of not only a district win, but also a year’s worth of bragging rights.

Coming into Friday’s game, Warren Central has a 3-3 record as well as a 1-0 record in district play. Last week they traveled to Ridgeland High School and came back with a 27-6 victory.

Offensively, the Vikings have leaned heavily on their running game to keep things afloat. Eric Collins Jr. is currently leading with 572 rushing yards and six touchdowns. Aden Greer is right behind him with 537 rushing yards and eight rushing scores.

Defensively, the defensive line has held WC together, with Ronnie Blossom(7 sacks), Larry Reynolds(10 sacks) Jr., and TK Qualls(5 sacks) in control of the line of scrimmage.

Down on Drummond Street, the Gators are still seeking their first win of the season. Although the Gators have yet to come away with a win, last week’s game against Neshoba County was one of their best offensive performances to date. Despite the Gators’ 0-6 record, a win this week would keep the playoffs still in their grasp, leaving both teams with a 1-1 record in district play.

Like the Vikings, the Gators have been most successful sticking to the running game. DeCorey Knight Jr has been their main contributor with 819 rushing yards and over 1,000 all-purpose yards for the season. Cedric Blackmore has become a proficient power back, with six rushing touchdowns and 400 yards.

Dennis Battle(5 sacks), Mincer Minor IV(6 pass deflections), Cameron Nailor(31 tackles), Jadarius Henderson(30 tackles), and Stephen Anderson(33 tackles) have been the defensive highlights for VHS.

Although Warren Central has won the past twelve straight games in the River City rivalry and statically are favored for Friday, the special thing about a rivalry game such as this is that anything can happen. Vicksburg was 0-9 when they pulled off their 13-7 double-overtime win in 2009.
