Richard Brown Ahlvin left his earthly home on October 18, 2024, at 80. Richard was born on June 24, 1944 in Detroit, Michigan. His family moved to Vicksburg to make their home, where Richard graduated from Cooper High School. He later graduated from Mississippi State University with a bachelor’s degree.
Skilled in electronics, Richard first worked at Thomas Furniture as a TV repairman. He later got a job at the Waterways Experiment Station, now called ERDC. He was employed there for more than fifty years. Richard’s love for music was known for his talent playing the organ. He began playing on The Sprague and later played at Tuminello’s Restaurant along with Jim Picken’s Band for several years. He then played at Jacque’s in the Park at Battlefield Inn, where his wife Sue, served as hostess at the restaurant. Many family birthday parties were held throughout the years, and Richard enjoyed playing as much as others enjoyed listening. He also played the organ at Lighthouse Baptist Church, where he was a member and played until he could no longer, as recently as 2-3 years ago. He was a member of the Organ Club, Radio Club, and miscellaneous other clubs.
He is pre-deceased by his wife, Sue Stapp Ahlvin, his father, Richard Glenn Ahlvin and mother, Maridel Brown Ahlvin, all of Vicksburg. He is survived by his sister, Alix Ahlvin Moro, of Sante Fe, NM, brothers, Marty Ahlvin (Suzanne) of Kosciusko, MS, and Alder Ahlvin (Sheree) of Vicksburg, MS. He is also survived by nieces, Kristin Moro Coleman and Mary Megan Moro of Sante Fe, NM, Barbara Ann Ahlvin of Hattiesburg, MS and nephew, Andrew Ahlvin of Vicksburg.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, October 24 from 1 pm to 3 pm at Fisher-Riles Funeral Home, 5000 Indiana Avenue with the service to begin at 3 pm. Graveside services will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Richard Brumfield, Bobby Hartley, Carter Worley, Jack Worley, Chris Ables, Sammy Stokes, and Martin Shows.
Honorary pallbearers will be Gil Worley, Mike Sharp, and members of Lighthouse Baptist Church.
A special thanks to Vicksburg Convalescent Home for their care and to Hope Bardwell, care-giver for several years, for her special, loving care.
Memorials may be made to Lighthouse Baptist Church.
