ERIC Stoltz was the first person cast for the role of Marty McFly in the iconic eighties time-travel masterpiece Back To The Future.
But he was fired and replaced by Michael J. Fox after approximately five weeks of filming — here we take a look at everything that happened and why.

Initial casting process
Before Eric Stoltz was cast, the movie’s director Robert Zemeckis and producer Bob Gale had their sights set on Michael J. Fox for the role of Marty McFly.
However, due to Michael’s commitment to the television series Family Ties, which he was starring in at the time, he was unavailable when filming was set to start.
This led Zemeckis and Gale to explore other options, ultimately deciding on Eric, who was gaining considerable recognition for his performance in the film Mask (1985) alongside Cher.
Studio influence
The decision to cast Eric was also influenced by Universal Pictures‘ studio president, Sidney Sheinberg.
He strongly advocated for Eric, believing that his dramatic acting skills would bring depth to the character.
At that time, he was seen as an up-and-coming actor with significant potential, making him a compelling choice for a lead role in a major film.
Dedication and commitment
Once cast, Eric approached the role with the dedication often associated with method actors.
He immersed himself in the character by insisting that everyone refer to him as Marty off-set and even adopted aspects of McFly’s persona, such as learning to skateboard and play guitar.
His commitment included physical changes, such as altering his appearance to fit the character’s youthful look.
Eric’s method acting contributed to a more serious atmosphere on set, which clashed with the playful environment Zemeckis and Gale were trying to create.
Some crew members noted that his intense approach made it challenging to foster camaraderie and humor among the cast and crew.
Creative differences
Eric’s serious demeanor didn’t sit right with the director and producer.
Zemeckis and Gale envisioned Marty as a more lighthearted and comedic character, essential for capturing the film’s adventurous spirit.

During early screenings of the footage, Zemeckis was apprehensive about reviewing Eric’s performance because he feared it would not meet his expectations.
When he finally did see it, he realized that the actor’s serious take on Marty was not working for the movie.

In Tom Shone’s book Blockbuster (2004), the director said it was “the hardest meeting I’ve ever had in my life and it was all my fault. I broke his heart.”
Transition to Michael J. Fox
Initially, Michael J. Fox was the filmmakers’ first choice for Marty McFly.
However, due to scheduling conflicts with his role in Family Ties, he was unavailable at the start of production.
