Pittsburgh Steelers ‘aggressively’ pursue shock trade following Russell Wilson QB starter drama

THE Pittsburgh Steelers have reportedly looked to add a piece to help the passing game.

The Steelers have a chance of trading for a star after stunningly naming Russell Wilson the team’s starting quarterback ahead of Week 7.

After Week 6, Pittsburgh replaced Fields at signal-caller with Wilson.

Head coach Mike Tomlin’s decision came at a surprise time as the Steelers were 4-2 under Fields.

But Wilson signed a one-year deal to be the team’s starting quarterback, but he suffered a calf injury on the eve of training camp and reaggravated it just days before Week 1.

And Fields averaged just 6.9 yards per attempt this season compared to Wilson, who averaged 7.2 last year.

The Steelers are looking to trade for a wide receiver per a report from CBS Sports.

Over the weekend, CBS NFL insider Jonathan Jones revealed that the Steelers will be active ahead of the November 5 NFL trade deadline.

“Sources believe the Kansas City Chiefs and Pittsburgh Steelers will be most aggressive in adding another receiver before the deadline gets here,” Jones wrote.

“Pittsburgh believes Russell Wilson has returned to form from a few years ago, and the hope is he can operate Arthur Smith’s offense more efficiently while opening up the vertical passing game. Coupling an improved offense with a stingy defense, Pittsburgh believes it is a contender in the AFC this year.”

Jones didn’t reveal exact options for the Steelers.

During the offseason, Pittsburgh traded Dionatae Johnson and attempted to trade for Brandon Aiyuk, who signed a long-term deal with the San Francisco 49ers.

The Steelers haven’t gotten great returns from the Steelers’ wide receiver group which is headlined by George Pickens, who recorded just 26 receptions in the team’s first six games of the season.

Johnson has been linked to a return trade that would send him back to Pittsburgh as the Carolina Panthers have a disappointing 1-6 record.

New York Jets’ Mike Williams and Jacksonville Jaguars’ Christian Kirk could also be options for Pittsburgh.

The Steelers didn’t trade a wide receiver ahead of their Sunday Night Football Week 7 matchup with the Jets, and it didn’t matter.

Wilson made his debut with Pittsburgh and led the team to a 37-15 victory at home.

He had a great connection with Pickens, who recorded five receptions for 111 yards and one touchdown.

Running back Najee Harris posted 21 carries for 102 yards and one touchdown.

The Steelers will take on the New York Giants in the Week 8 edition of Monday Night Football.
