Manchester United legends Paul Scholes and Nicky Butt have claimed they find the ‘Class of 92’ tag ‘cringe-worthy’.
Scholes and Butt are members of United’s famous Class of ’92 and played a key role in the Red Devils dominating the Premier League’s first two decades.
Along with David Beckham, Ryan Giggs, Gary Neville and Phil Neville, the duo have been immortalized in football history for their contributions at United.
However, despite the high praise for the Class of 92, both Scholes and Butt have recently admitted they don’t like the tag.
Speaking about the Football’s greatest eras podcast, Scholes asked Butt: ‘Did you like that Niek? I didn’t like that’.

Kont replied: ‘No, I don’t like it’. Scholes then said: ‘I don’t like it now’.
Butt continued, “I cringe when I hear it. But it is what it is. That’s what we’ve been known for since we all came through with Sir Alex Ferguson.
“And yeah, it’s something that I shy away from and it just becomes something that’s probably bigger than it actually was, if I’m honest with you.”
Scholes then replied: ‘Do you know why I feel bad about it? Because that same year there were 10 or 15 of us.’
“Yes,” Butt said. “I also think it looks like we were the ones who won the award, but without the older pros and the more experienced players there wouldn’t have been a ‘Class of 92’ I would say.
“But yeah, a bit weird for me, but it is what it is and that’s what we’re known for and embrace it, I would say.”

Both players were crucial cogs in the United system during the years under Sir Alex Ferguson. Scholes won 25 trophies in 718 games, while Butt played 387 games and won 14 trophies.
Scholes and Butt often reflect on their time at United together on the podcast and recently revealed their picks for the most ruthless player axing of the Ferguson era.
They singled out Jaap Stam and Roy Keane as particularly unlucky as they received a brutal speech from United’s former head coach.
