Officials locate woman’s body in Pickens Co.

PICKENS COUNTY, S.C. (WSPA) — The search for a woman last seen in Pickens County on Tuesday has come to an end.

According to the Pickens County Coroner’s Office, the body of Dr. Carol Burger Poe was found on Friday.

The coroner’s office said that the 67-year-old woman’s body was found in a forested area east of Camp Hannon in Sunset.

Officials said that Dr. Poe appears to have fallen between 40 and 50 feet fall into a ravine. Poe suffered multiple blunt force injuries, with the manner of death being classified as accidental.

According to Pickens County Emergency Services, Dr. Poe went missing Tuesday afternoon.

Poe’s husband called officials around 5:30 p.m. to report his wife’s absence. The woman’s husband said he had been spoken with her on the phone but then was unable to reach her.

One of Dr. Poe’s dogs was found during searches, as well as some of Poe’s belongings.

Investigators soon found Poe’s body, with her dog in good condition next to her.

Officials searched the area at Horse Pasture Road and Laurel Valley Road in Sunset. Investigators described the area as remote with many SCDNR trails.

SCDNR, SC Foresty Commission, SLED, Pickens Co. Emergency Services, Anderson Co. Emergency Services, Oconee Co. Emergency Services & Pickens County Sheriff all assisted in the search.
