(COLORADO) — A strong solar flare may give Colorado a chance to see the northern lights (also known as the aurora borealis) from Thursday night, Oct. 3 into Friday morning, Oct. 4.
While this event does not look as strong as the event back in May, there is a chance it may become strong enough at times for them to be visible.
Your best bet to see them is to get away from city lights, allow your eyes to adjust to the darkness, and keep your eyes peeled to the north. Since this event does not look as strong as the one earlier this year, it may only be visible closer to the horizon, if at all.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) released Thursday evening’s forecast for the potential of seeing the northern lights. For reference, the higher the Kp level (the strength of the northern lights), the better the chance of seeing the lights.
Typically, we need at least a Kp of 7 or higher for them to be visible here. Right now, the forecast for Thursday night is for a max Kp of 7 as seen below.
