NEWCASTLE saw off a spirited effort from League Two AFC Wimbledon to advance in the Carabao Cup.
A first-half penalty from Fabian Schar was enough to send Toon through to a last-16 clash with Chelsea.

The match had been re-arranged following a SINKHOLE opening up at Wimbledon’s ground.
Eddie Howe opted for a front three of Miguel Almiron, William Osula, and Harvey Barnes at St James Park.
But a stubborn Dons defence kept the Premier League stars at bay for much of the first 45 minutes.
Toon’s domination on the ball eventually paid off as Almiron was hauled down in the box.
Schar stepped up, smashing the penalty past Dons stopper Owen Goodman.
Bruno Guimaraes was introduced by Howe after the break as the Magpies looked to make the tie safe.
However, several players were guilty of missing a plethora of chances to put the game to bed.
Bruno, Sean Longstaff, and Joe Willock were all denied by heroic last-ditch blocks.
Wimbledon held firm for the remainder of the contest, despite failing to register a shot on goal.
But it was Newcastle who are through to face the Blues in a rematch of last year’s quarter final.
