My Family’s child star unrecognisable two decades on from BBC sitcom debut

MY Family actor Gabriel Thomson looks worlds away from his role as Mikey in the hit BBC series.

The star found fame in 2000 thanks to playing the part of the youngest member of the Harper crew in the sitcom.

My Family became a breakout hit for the Beeb in 2000 and went on to air for 11 years with repeats of the programme still being broadcast to this day.

However, viewers would be forgiven for no longer recognising Gabriel after ditching his boy-ish looks in favour of a much more swish look.

Gone are the days of his character’s trademark glasses and nerd-ish looks, with Gabriel instead sporting a slightly cropped hairstyle and a clean-shaven look.

The 37-year-old star regularly uploads shirtless snaps to his Instagram account as he keeps his fans up to date on his life and adventures after his My Family success.

In recent years, Gabriel has focused on a more active lifestyle and now regularly undertakes epic runs and challenges in order to raise funds for charity.

Gabriel raised £3000 for mental health organisation Mind by undertaking a marathon which sparked a love for his new hobby.

Writing on Instagram at the time, Gabriel said: “Thanks to everyone who donated and showed love.

“It was truly an amazing day and one of the toughest things I’ve done in my life so far! Naturally, I plan on doing more.

“From sharing tears with a fellow runner before kickoff, to dragging myself the last six miles on essentially energy gels and willpower alone, this has been a beautifully transformative experience.”

Earlier this year, he embarked on an even bigger journey when he completed a lengthy pilgrimage to Camino de Santiago.

Gabriel’s conquest saw him run “the 550 miles of the Camino Frances across the north of Spain and along to Finisterre (the end of the earth!) and Muxía!”.

He was able to raise funds for the British Red Cross during his journey as he said of the experience: “I, like many, have increasingly found myself basing my estimation of humanity’s character on what I see on social media or on the news.

“I saw so much beauty in so many different forms and was lucky enough to feel a kind of freedom I think one rarely gets the chance to experience in life.”

Gabriel ditched treading the boards to go back to university where he studied philosophy at King’s College in London with the ambition of becoming a human rights lawyer.

However, his IMDb profile reveals he did step back into his acting shoes in 2020 to star in a horror called A Little More Flesh.

His only other acting credit between that and My Family was in 2014 drama The Lost Choices.

The same cannot be said for many of his co-stars, who have gone on to appear in a wealth of TV and film projects.

Zoë Wanamaker, 72, has become a prolific stage and screen actress appearing in a whole host of TV programmes and films.

Her on-screen hubby Robert Lindsay, also 72, has starred in a number of West End productions as well as the 2019 film Maleficient: Mistress of Evil and ITV drama, McDonald & Dodds.

Meanwhile Kris Marshall, 48, went on to be the main detective in Death in Paradise from 2014-2017 as well as Sanditon and Netflix Christmas film, Father Christmas is Back.
