Moment excavator bucket smashes into SUV as mom credits driving strategy with saving her teen daughter’s life

A MOM has been credited with saving her teen daughter’s life after an excavator bucket smashed into their SUV.

The shaken-up parent said a “split second” was the difference between life and death for her and her child.

Amelia Winslow was driving down a rural road in King County, WA, when her car was struck by a chunk of solid steel at speed.

Photos of the aftermath show the front end of her car almost torn clear away, with debris strewn across the street.

And the moment of impact was partially captured on camera.

Not much can be seen but the wrenching sound of metal on metal echoed audibly around the sleepy neighborhood.

Amelia told Kiro 7 News: “I’ve never seen anything like it, I’ve never heard anything like it.

“Your eyes and brain are not prepared for seeing a piece of steel like that flying through the air.

“I just saw a giant piece of metal falling out of the sky

CCTV later reportedly revealed what had happened.

The footage apparently showed a truck travelling in the opposite direction towing an excavator on a flatbed.

It is understood that the heavy metal excavator bucket came loose and toppled off the flatbed, right into the path of the SUV carrying Amelia and her 13-year-old daughter.

Thankfully, the quick-thinking mom had just long enough to hit the brakes, stopping a “freak accident” from becoming a deadly disaster.

She recalled: “It felt like driving your car into a brick wall.

“I’m so glad that I wasn’t looking over at my daughter or changing the music or looking at directions.

“It would have landed right on my windshield and probably crushed my daughter and me.

“Somebody needs to be held accountable for the fact that this was a really dangerous piece of equipment unsecured on the back of a truck.
