Mayor George Flaggs, Jr. Thanks Fostoria Neighborhood Association for an Informative Meeting on Community Safety

Fostoria Community Meeting

Vicksburg Daily News –

VICKSBURG, MSMayor George Flaggs, Jr. extends his sincere appreciation to the Fostoria Neighborhood Association for hosting an informative meeting on Wednesday, October 2, 2024, that discussed recent shootings and neighborhood safety. The meeting provided an important platform for community members to voice their concerns, share experiences, and explore collaborative solutions to improve safety in their area with city officials and the Vicksburg Police Department.

“I was moved by the stories I heard last night,” said Mayor Flaggs. “Listening to parents express their desire for safe neighborhoods where their children can play, and hearing residents speak about wanting to feel secure sitting on their front porches, emphasized how vital this issue is. Everyone deserves to feel safe in their own community.”

Mayor Flaggs emphasized the importance of community involvement and reiterated his commitment to his leadership philosophy. “I work by the philosophy of listening, learning, and leading, and last night’s meeting gave everyone in attendance the opportunity to do just that,” said Mayor Flaggs. “We listened to the genuine concerns of our residents, learned from each other’s experiences, and now we can continue to lead the change that will bring greater safety to our community.”

Mayor Flaggs also commends Chief Penny Jones and the Vicksburg Police Department for their active participation in the meeting. “The Police Department’s presence was crucial not only in explaining their procedures but in demonstrating their commitment to partnering with the community to make our neighborhoods safer,” he added.

In an effort to further strengthen the relationship between law enforcement and the community, Mayor Flaggs encourages residents to participate in the Vicksburg Police Department’s Citizens Academy, which begins on Tuesday, October 15.

The Citizens Academy offers residents an in-depth look at the department’s mission, vision, values, and day-to-day operations, as well as its policies and procedures.

“This program allows residents to gain a deeper understanding of how the department operates and helps build trust, respect, and a stronger connection between the Vicksburg Police Department and the citizens it serves,” said Mayor Flaggs. “It’s a great opportunity for our community to continue the momentum from last night’s meeting and stay actively involved in making our city a safer place.”
The Citizens Academy is designed to educate participants about the inner workings of the police department, including the roles, capabilities, and limitations of law enforcement. By fostering transparency and mutual understanding, the academy helps bridge the gap between the community and the Police Department, ultimately contributing to safer neighborhoods across Vicksburg.

Interested persons can pick up applications at the Front Desk of the Police Department, 820 Veto Street. The application deadline is Friday, October 11, 2024. For more information, call (601) 636-2511.
