SAN FRANCISCO — St. Ignatius didn’t have it all the way. But the Wildcats had it when it counted against Serra.
SI trailed the NorCal titan Padres for most of the two teams’ West Catholic Athletic League opener on Friday night in San Francisco. Serra led 20-7 after three quarters, and things were looking bleak for the home team.
But two fourth-quarter touchdowns, capped off by Jarious Hogan’s 30-yard rushing score with 1:14 remaining, gave the Wildcats a late 21-20 lead. And they held on for dear life, securing the victory when Serra quarterback Andrew Heneghan’s desperation heave was batted down near the goal line as the clock struck zero.
“We was all taught by our coach that if the scoreboard is not zero-zero, then the game still continues,” Hogan said afterward. “So we just kept executing until the clock hit zero and we got what we wanted.”
