Major grocery chain & Aldi rival opening more US stores despite struggles – but shoppers don’t ‘understand the hype’

A MAJOR grocery chain that is also Aldi’s rival has opened another US store despite struggles – but some shoppers say they “don’t understand the hype”.

Lidl is continuing to open stores across the US – and shoppers have formed very lengthy queues outside stores during their grand openings.

Lidl US has announced its grand opening of a new store in the Bronx, New York on October 23.

The store will be located at 700 Exterior St., Bronx, NY 10451 – and by the reaction to some previous Lidl US openings, people can’t wait.

Local leaders will welcome Lidl US to the community at a ribbon cutting event starting early at 7:40 am.

This will then be followed by a grand opening celebration featuring special offers for shoppers.

The store will operate daily from 8am to 10pm.

The new location is part of Lidl US’ ever-growing store network in the New York City area.

Other nearby Lidl US stores in New York include locations in Harlem, Glen Oaks, and Weehawken to name a few.

And this Lidl US store is even estimated to create around 48 new jobs.

At the grand opening event, the first 100 customers in line before the store opens at 8:00am will receive a special gift card ranging from $5 to an unbelievable $100 each.

Shoppers can also sample Lidl US’ assortment and take advantage of special giveaways.

In late September Lidl also opened a branch in Forsyth, Georgia, which had people queuing throughout the night for the grand reveal.

A user said on Facebook: “So what if I stood in line to go to a new grocery store.

“The guy I was talking to said it’s the largest Lidl they have.”

The shopper was also very happy with their purchases, thinking that this branch “have higher-end choices.”

But commenters were less than pleased at the post – and say they “don’t understand the hype”.

One user said: “It’s a grocery store people. Y’all have way too much free time on your hands.”

Another commented: “I don’t get it. Nothing would make me stand in line for groceries for sub par food.”

But others agreed with the user who made the post, with one shopper saying they “stood in line from 1am to 7:30 for their baguettes.”

Another added: “They have great deals and good quality products.”

How to cut the cost of your grocery shop

BELOW are some tips on how to reduce the amount you spend on groceries.

  • Write yourself a list – Only buy items that you need. If it isn’t on your list, don’t put it in the trolley
  • Create a budget – Work out a weekly budget for your food shopping
  • Never shop hungry – You are far more likely to buy  more food if your tummy is rumbling
  • Don’t buy pre-chopped veggies or fruit – The extra they’ll charge for chopping can be eye watering
  • Use social media – Follow your favourite retailers to find out about the latest deals
  • Be disloyal – You may want to go to different stores to find the best bargains
  • Check the small print –  It’s always worth checking the price per kg/lb/litre when comparing offers so you’re making a like for like decision as a bigger box won’t necessarily mean you get more
  • Use your loyalty cards – Don’t be afraid to sign up to them all. They all work slightly differently – work out what bonus suits you better and remember to trade in your points for additional rewards
