Halloween may be this week, but communities in the San Bernardino Mountains are already thinking ahead to winter after snow fell for the first time this season.
Video obtained by KTLA shows steady snowfall on Highway 18 in Big Bear overnight, and while it didn’t accumulate on the street, the snow still made driving conditions hazardous; according to news stringer service OnSceneTV, the “wet, slushy” snow made for slippery roads, and fog created poor visibility.
The overnight temperature was hovering around freezing, and high winds are expected to cause nighttime temperatures to drop even further as the week goes on.
That said, during the day, it will be “relatively warm” throughout the San Bernardino Mountains, KTLA 5’s Henry DiCarlo said, adding that there remains a chance for more snow this weekend.
“We do have an unsettled weekend forecast [for mountain communities] with a snow level of 7,000 feet,” DiCarlo said. “It’s relatively warm…with the rain this week, [Southern California] is still hovering in the mid 60s, which means mountain communities are not really dropping until the evening hours.”
“We could see the snow level drop to maybe 6,000 feet, but most of that light to moderate snow will fall around 7,000 feet,” he continued.
Overnight low temperatures in the San Bernardino Mountains this week will hover between the low teens and mid-20s.
