During an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live, Johnson gave his opinion about how Bronny’s development should be handled by the Lakers.
Many fans want to see LeBron and his son take the court together, but Johnson thinks they should wait for him to develop.
“If I’m Bronny, I would tell my dad, ‘Just let me play in the G League all season so that I can develop,’” Johnson said.
“He needs playing time. He doesn’t need to be sitting on the Laker bench and not playing.”
That isn’t Johnson saying that Bronny won’t be a successful basketball player, he just thinks that he will be even better if he spends some time developing.
“That’s not a knock against him, he’s just not ready,” Johnson said.
“He needs to develop more and then he will be ready because he has some great talent and skills.
“But he needs to develop those skills at a much better clip if he wants to play 15-20 minutes a night in the NBA or more.”
Johnson has no official role with the Lakers, but he has remained close to the team throughout his retirement.
He wouldn’t tell Jimmy Kimmel if he knows how the 12-man roster would shape up, but he did say he thinks LeBron will know what’s best for Bronny.
New head coach JJ Reddick has already said that Bronny will spend a lot of his time in the G-League, but he will get a chance to play with his father.
Redick said he expects the young prospect to join the team “sooner rather than later.”
NBA fans weren’t exactly convinced with a scenario where Bronny plays on the Lakers and shared their thoughts on social media.
“We are A Joke. Lakers will finish 12th in the West. We big trash,” one fan said.
