International Day of Older Persons is celebrated every year on 1 October. It emphasizes the significance of the experience, wisdom, and contribution that older people have to give. That is to enhance awareness over the problems faced by the elderly and further to safeguard the rights, health, and overall welfare of older persons.
An ever-growing aging population across the world and with this comes issues like health care, financial security, social inclusion, and the rest for the elderly. In 2024, this day focuses on the challenges that older people are facing. Together with this, it celebrates their valuable contribution they are making to families, workplaces, and societies.
According to the United Nations, the number of people aged 60 years and more will double by 2050. The impact this will have on the future social structure and policies requires an emphasis of quality life in older people from now on.
The theme for International Day of Older Persons 2024 is “Aging with dignity: The need to strengthen care and support systems for older persons”. This theme insists on strengthening the support system at the world level for older persons.
In India, the elderly population is also growing at a rapid pace. Currently, 153 million people of the Indian state are over 60 years of age. By 2050, this number is expected to reach 347 million. The health, economic and social problems in these elderly Indian population have astounded everyone. Many of these people are troubled due to health services unavailable for them, financial insecurity and a lack of proper social security. During this, it becomes essential for the Government of India and other institutions of society to design policies and schemes that can better the lives of these elderly.
International Day of Older Persons was for the first time observed on 1 October 1991. This day was declared on 1 October in the year 1990 by the United Nations General Assembly. It intended to direct attention to the problems of older persons and their contribution to society. Earlier, there was the Vienna International Plan of Action for Aging that had been adopted in the year 1982 by the World Conference on Aging.
