Home repair supplies to be handed out following Hurricane Helene

SPARTANBURG, S.C. (WSPA) — Community members in the Upstate are still coming together to help each other nearly a month after Hurricane Helene hit.

“We were without power for ten days and we are still without internet three weeks later,” said Brandon Coates, CEO of Steelcore Industrial and Welding Supply.

Steelcore leaders said they are the largest independently owned nuts and bolts supplier in the Southeast.

“We’ve got big screws, little screws, all types of screws we are going to be giving away,” Coates said.

Even though Steelcore was hit hard by Hurricane Helene, Coates said his company wants to help others impacted.

The company will soon hand out more than $100,000 worth of home rebuilding supplies.

“[We’ll be] giving away free building supplies, gloves, glasses, wood screws, dry wall screws, things people need to rebuild in our community,” Coates said.

Supplies will can be obtained at the Steelcore’s Spartanburg location at 849 California Avenue, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday.

After the Upstate gets supplies, more will be taken to North Carolina.

Coates said after Helene hit, his team spent three days up there helping those in need.

“There was a lot of people stuck in their homes that we were able to help and unfortunately there were some areas that we were the first in to do some recovery,” Coates said.

After seeing the damage in the Carolinas, Coates says you can’t help but get involved.

“People don’t really understand the devastation of what has happened in our area, Coates said. “Pictures are one thing, videos are one thing, but seeing it in person is a completely different story.”
