Hickory Metro Continuing To Feel Effects Of Tropical Storm Helene

Tropical Storm Helene continues to move through western North Carolina this morning, and continued rainfall is possible into the mid-afternoon hours. As of this morning, Over the past 24 hours, Hickory had received just over five inches of rain. The rainfall total in Lenoir during that time period is just over three inches. Morganton’s total during that 24 hours was just under four inches. Taylorsville is reporting approximately four-and-a-half inches.

The higher elevations in the region reported higher rain totals. Blowing Rock has received approximately six-and-a-half inches. Duke Energy is reporting scattered power outages this morning in the Hickory Metro. The higher elevations in western North Carolina are reporting larger power outage numbers. The chance for rain continues until the early to mid-afternoon hours.

States of Emergency have been declared statewide and in area counties and municiplities including those in the Hickory Metro. The declaration enables Emergency Services to implement coordinated response and recovery efforts. All four Catawba County Parks (Bakers Mountain Park, Mountain Creek Park, Riverbend Park and St. Stephens Park) remain closed until further notice.

All Catawba County Schools are closed for students today (September 27). It will be an optional workday for all teachers, replacing the previously scheduled elementary/middle school workday. QUEST childcare will also be closed.
