In a game where offense was tough to come by, Izzi Wood rose to the occasion, finding the net with six minutes to play to lift App State to a 1-0 road victory over Louisiana on Thursday.
The Mountaineers (5-3-2, 2-0-0) have now won three straight matches and posted their fourth clean sheet of the season in the process, limiting the Ragin’ Cajuns to just four shots in the contest.
Wood’s goal was the 21st of her career, moving her into sixth place on the App State career scoring list. She has now scored five goals across her last five contests to move into the Sun Belt lead with her sixth goal of the season overall.
The marker came in the 84th minute of play. Sydney Snowden, on a sliding effort, booted the ball forward to Wood who patiently dribbled her defender to the top of the box before uncorking a left-footed shot which curled into the top left corner of the net.
The only other shots on goal in the game for the Mountaineers came on back-to-back efforts from Ellie Garrison in the 55th minute of play. The freshman drilled one off the crossbar from the top of the box and then on the follow-up chance had another shot saved by the Cajuns goalkeeper.
Garrison was one of five field players to play all 90 minutes in the match.
Sarah Wommack made a pair of saves in goal en route to the clean sheet, while Snowden also made a key defensive play late, clearing away a potential goal-scoring opportunity in the 82nd minute of play.
App State joins James Madison as the only Sun Belt teams to begin Sun Belt play 2-0.
App State will be back in action on Sunday as it welcomes Arkansas State to Boone for the Mountaineers’ home opener of conference play. The Red Wolves are 0-2 in conference action after falling at home to Georgia Southern on Thursday night. Sunday’s match will kick off at 12 p.m. and will be broadcast on ESPN+.
