Kaizer Chiefs legend Tsepo Masilela has given his thoughts on the club appointing Yusuf Maart as captain.
Amakhosi had four different captains last season, with Maart being one of them. Towards the end of last season, Given Msimanga was one wearing the armband under Cavin Johnson.
Since Nasreddine Nabi took over as Kaizer Chiefs coach, the captain’s armband has now gone to Maart. Speaking on the SoccerBeat podcast, Masilela discussed the midfielder’s position in the team.
“If you look, at some point, Itu was captain but wasn’t getting game time,” he said. “So I don’t think wearing an armband makes you a guaranteed starter in a team. I think it’s an old mentality, in total football, if you are captain, you have to perform, it doesn’t mean an armband will win you a starting eleven.”
Kaizer Chiefs appoint Maart as permanent captain
Masilela told Cape Town Spurs midfielder Michael Morton that Amakhosi management saw something in Maart before handing him the armband. He said both the club and Nabi chose Maart to lead the team this season.
“Judging from where I am sitting Mickey, I would believe it’s the Sporting Director which is Kaizer Motaung Jr and the coach. The coach doesn’t look like someone who will be pushed around, he looks like a tough person who wants to have a say in everything around the team.
“If I look at the current Kaizer Chiefs team, he is the guy who has been around for a long,” Masilela on the club captain.
“He is 29 years old and has been playing for three seasons for the club,” he said.
“When coaches select a captain, they normally go with someone that they have faith in their qualities. The qualities that us at home we haven’t seen. I’m sure there’s certain qualities that the coaches have seen in Maart hence they went for him.
The former Kaizer Chiefs defender pointed out Maart’s qualities and what makes him a good captain.
“You can see his technical gifted, he can play long balls and diagonal balls and he is also good at holding the ball at his feet when building from the back. He is a selfless player and fighter, he gives a lot to the team, and you need people like him.”
“I believe he brings balance to the Kaizer Chiefs team,” said the ex-AmaZulu captain.
