Dussehra, or Vijayadashami, is one of the major festivals in the Hindu religion. It symbolises the victory of good over evil. Accordingly, it is the day when Lord Rama killed the demon king Ravana of Lanka and this is also the day on which Goddess Durga killed the demon Mahishasura. So, in every part of the country, effigies of Ravana, Kumbhakarna and Meghnath are burnt every year on Dussehra.
This year the festival of Vijayadashami will be celebrated on 12 October 2024. Dashami Tithi is starting from 10:58 am on October 12 and will end on October 13 at 09:08 am. But Dussehra will be observed on the day of 12 October only because most of the Hindu festivals are observed on the basis of Udaya Tithi.
There are two major mythological stories behind Vijayadashami. This festival is thus celebrated as a victory of good over evil. According to the first legend, this day marked the killing by Lord Rama of the demon king Ravana, who kidnapped Mother Sita and jailed her. According to the second legend, on this day Goddess Durga killed a demon named Mahishasura who was terrorizing both the earth and heaven. Goddess Durga fought with Mahishasura for nine days and killed him on the day of Dashami. On this occasion, Mother Durga is worshiped for nine days of Navratri and Dussehra is celebrated as Vijayadashami on the tenth day.
Vijayadashami holds significance for weapon worship. It is believed that before war with Ravana, Lord Rama worshipped weapons. This marks the beginning of weapons worship on this day. In addition to this, there is Shami and Aparajita trees as well. According to holy texts, it is said to be very auspicious to see the Neelkanth bird on this day, bringing prosperity as well as happiness.
Vijayadashami holds importance not only from the religious point of view but also holds great importance from a social and cultural standpoint. This festival gives us a message that truth always wins and the end of evil is sure. Dussehra inspires courage, patience, and struggle in man’s life. People wish to get rid of their enemies and start a new life on this day. Moreover, it is also an indication of social unity and brotherhood as people from every class and community join the celebration of Dussehra.
