Narak Chaturdashi is otherwise referred to as Chhoti Diwali or Yam Chaturdashi, celebrated a day before Diwali in Hinduism. This day falls on the Chaturdashi Tithi of Krishna Paksha of Kartik month. According to mythological beliefs, on this day, Lord Krishna killed the demon Narakasura and freed 16,000 women. On this day, Lord Krishna, Mata Lakshmi, and Yamraj are worshiped, and a lamp is especially lit in the name of Yama to ward off the fear of untimely death in the family.
Narak Chaturdashi this year is going to fall on 30th October, in the year 2024. As per Panchang, Chaturdashi Tithi starts from 1:15 pm on 30th October and culminates on 3:52 pm on 31st October. The astrologers believe it is an apt time when one should light the lamp at Yama’s name, in the evening of 30th October.
Some Specific customs are also followed in the day of Narak Chaturdashi. On this day, the deities are worshipped after taking a bath to purify the body, known as Abhyang Snan, thus at this special importance also on this day nobody should hold any kind of malice towards another and must only consume vegetarian food. Apart from this, on this very day, there should be lighting of a mustard oil lamp in the name of Yama in the southern direction of the house to free oneself from all forms of sorrow, fear, and negativity.
This festival also calls for traditional food like potato-chilli pakodas, dal vadas, and sweets. Ol or Suran vegetable is widely used in Eastern India and especially prepared and consumed on this day.
