Karwa Chauth is an ancient Indian festival of married women who observe the fast for long life and happiness for their husbands. Karwa Chauth fast in 2024 will fall on Sunday, 20 October. Chaturthi Tithi will start on 19 October at 6:17 pm and end on 20 October at 3:47 pm. Women who will observe sargi before sunrise on this day will also end the fast by offering arghya after the moonrise at night. On Karva Chauth day, the moon will rise at 7:54 pm.
Myths and legends have various stories behind the fast of Karwa Chauth. The most popular story is that Mother Parvati was fasting with the wish of a long life of Lord Shiva and a happy life with him. In another story, it has been written that once, when the battle between gods and demons was going in its losing course, Brahmadev suggested the wives of the gods. Such practice continued and soon this fast became very prominent. All wives of the gods used to observe this fast and conserve their husbands. This still does happen in the modern times as well.
There is some significant importance of the Karwa Chauth fast in the sense of worship and rituals. On this day, a woman takes sargi before sun-rise which is provided by her mother-in-law. Sargi mainly contains dry fruits, sweets, fruits, and makeup items. After this meal, women observe Nirjala Vrat throughout the day that is, they do not consume water and food the whole of the day. This fast ends up after moonrise wherein women offer Arghya to the moon and pray for their husband’s long life and happy life.
Earthen pots are especially used during the puja. It is considered holy and it is considered a symbol of the earth element. Water is filled in the pot and offered to the moon and after this women break their fast by drinking water from their husband’s hand. This process makes the relationship between husband and wife even deeper and stronger.
The Karwa Chauth fast is considered an important one. It is a kind of fast, which is initiated with Sargi before sunrise. It is through the activity of Sargi that the love and regard of mother-in-law and daughter-in-law are portrayed. Through Sargi, the mother-in-law offers her daughter-in-law dry fruits, sweets, fruits, and other cosmetics, and she eats all those before sunrise. Even if there is no tradition of Sargi in a family, fasting women avoid eating anything after sunrise and observe Nirjala fast.
