Karwa Chauth is the major festival observed by married women in India, which includes a long life of their husbands and well-married life. The day is specifically observed in North India but it has spread across the country with the passage of time. According to the Hindu calendar, the Karva Chauth fast takes place on the Chaturthi date of Krishna Paksha of the Kartik month. This year i.e. in 2024, Karva Chauth will fall on 20 Oct 2024, being a Sunday. On this day the moon will rise at 7:54 pm, but here also, the time can go a little ahead/behind in various regions.
The fast of Karwa Chauth has been followed from ancient times and the very key purpose of observing it is for wishing the husband long and healthy life. Religious believe that Mother Parvati also followed this fast for Lord Shiva. Another says that when war was going on between gods and demons, evil people won over the gods. Then goddess wives of gods went before Brahmadev and begged to provide a solution to save them; then Brahmadev told them to observe the fast of Karva Chauth. Due to this fast, the gods were saved and from then the tradition of keeping this fast starts.
On Karwa Chauth day, women keep Nirjala fast, i.e., they do not eat or drink something from the morning till night. This fast starts with taking ‘Sargi’ before sunrise and ends up by offering Arghya to the moon after the moon rise in the night. It holds special significance, which the mother-in-law provides to her daughter-in-law. It contains dry fruits, fruits, sweets, and makeup articles. The fasting women avoid water the entire day after consuming Sargi and break the fast after viewing the moon at night.
Make-up has special significance for women who are married. This fast is a symbol of good fortune and happy married life, so, women do special make-up on this day. During the fast, women definitely wear mehndi, sindoor, mangalsutra, bangles, bindi, and toe rings. Wearing these six items increases good fortune and brings happiness and prosperity in married life.
Firstly, Karwa Chauth is especially a delight for newly wed women. The practice sends fruits, sweets, and other gifts to the daughter from her mother’s house on this very day. Such practice has been mostly seen in Northern India. Clothes, utensils, or other things are also sent for relatives and in-laws.
Other significant trend practiced on Karva Chauth is the donation. Post puja, fasting women donate bangles, bindi, sindoor, mirror, comb, ribbon, shagun items in a shringar thali to mother-in-law, sister-in-law, or senior married woman. Besides this, donations are also provided to the poor women that bring happiness and prosperity. Donation increases the fortunes of women and they get happiness in the married life.
