Govardhan Puja is one of the important festivals of Indian culture, which falls on the fourth day of Diwali Mahaparva. According to this day, it has been seen that devotees worship Lord Krishna who is said to guard people in Braj by lifting the Govardhan mountain over his little finger.
Govardhan Puja is commemorated on the Pratipada date of Shukla Paksha of Kartik month. This year (2024) this date coincides with 2 November. Auspicious time of the Puja is from 6:00 am to 8:00 am and from 3:23 pm to 5:35 pm. This festival conveys the message to be thankful to nature and preserve natural resources.
On this day, devotees create an idol of Govardhan from cow dung, which is decorated with flowers and rangoli. Special bhog is offered on this day, including Annakut and 56 bhog prasad. On this day, devotees worship together with their family and chant the praises of Govardhan Maharaj.
It is also mentioned that Lord Indra, once to punish the people of Braj, rained on them with all his might. Hence, it is Lord Krishna who saved them by lifting the mountain Govardhan. For this reason, people celebrate this festival every year.
