The legacy of Mahatma Gandhi, synonymous with the term Father of the Nation in India, inspires and will continue to do so throughout the world. Mahatma Gandhi was born on 2 October 1869 at Porbandar in Gujarat. He studied law at University College London. He began his career in South Africa but faced racial discrimination. His concept of non-violent resistance – ‘satyagraha’ – developed there.
Gandhi returned to India and became one of the most important leaders of the independence movement. He rallied Indians against the colonial rule through non-violence and civil disobedience. It was in 1930 with the Salt Satyagraha, and the Quit India Movement of 1942, that this individual became a national icon. His belief in truth and self-reliance coupled with social cohesion inspired people not only in India but also globally.
Even after his assassination on 30 January 1948, Gandhi’s teachings continued to influence many, and it is through his lessons that most social justice movements today continue to draw inspiration.
Gandhi Jayanti is observed every 2nd October of the year, which coincides as a national holiday in India. On the day, prayers and memorial services are held along with cultural programs in India from dusk to dawn. The main ceremony is held at Raj Ghat in Delhi because Mahatma Gandhi was cremated there. Political leaders, dignitaries, and common citizens come together for the tribute.
A day of importance is Gandhi Jayanti because Gandhi emphasized nonviolence, peace, and truth in society. Modern times today have many conflicts in various forms. That is why the message of Gandhi remains an important source for resolving peaceful resolution. It is further commemorated as International Day of Nonviolence, making it very significant globally.
We at least remember Gandhi’s message and pay respects not just to his contribution but also to the values he stood for. Discussions and activities around the ideas of Gandhi are organized through schools, organizations, and communities.
Satyagraha, a doctrine of non-violent resistance by Mahatma Gandhi, is so an effective tool against social and political injustice that movements like the Salt March and the call for non-cooperation against British rule attracted millions of people to join the freedom struggle without violence.
