Dussehra or Vijayadashami is said to be one of the prominent events of Hinduism, which falls every year on the Dashami Tithi of Shukla Paksha of the month of Ashwin. On this day, good is believed to have triumphed over evil and truth over untruth. The festival of Dussehra is especially celebrated because of two grand events: one, when Goddess Durga killed the demon Mahishasura and the other, when Lord Shri Ram killed Ravana and freed Mother Sita.
According to the Panchang, this year Dussehra will be on October 12, 2024. Dashami date will begin from October 12 at 10:58 am and will till 09:08 am on 13, October, 2024. On this day, the combination of Sarvartha Siddhi Yoga and Shravan Nakshatra is also being formed, which are very auspicious. This yoga is not auspicious for weapon worship and religious works. The puja shall commence from 2:02 pm to 2:48 pm on October 12. The time for Ravana Dahan will start from 5:54 pm and run for nearly two-and-half hours.
On Dussehra, the weapon holds special importance. It is said that Lord Rama worshipped weapons before killing Ravana. On this day, Shami and Aparajita trees are also worshipped. The Shami tree is considered a symbol of victory, and it is given a prominent place in the weapon worship. Other than this, on this day, the appearance of the Neelkanth bird is also considered auspicious which brings prosperity and happiness.
On Dussehra, effigies of Ravana, Kumbhakarna, and Meghnath are burnt. That symbolizes in metaphors the victory of good over evil. By killing Ravana, the bad deeds and evil tendencies are killed and goodness is promoted. Burning Ravana in a way gives the message of destroying the evils inside every person, due to which peace and goodwill remain in society.
According to the myth, on this day, Goddess Durga killed the demon Mahishasura. Mahishasura was a demon who ruled the world as the king of demons by his evil powers. For nine days and nine nights, Goddess Durga fought Mahishasura and defeated him to win. The festival is known as the nine-day fasts of “Navratri,” which culminate on the day of Dussehra.
Scriptures reveal that worshiping on the day of Dussehra, Lord Rama, Goddess Durga, Shri Ganesh and Hanuman Ji keeps defeat away from enemies and happiness and prosperity keeps on happening in life. Worshiping the entire Ramayana on this day brings peace and prosperity into life.
