Durga Ashtami fast is highly important in Sanatan Dharma. On Sharadiya Navratri, it is very special when Mother Bhagwati’s worship is done. On this day, it also becomes known as Maha Ashtami. Durga Puja begins from this very day and it is especially worshipped as Maha Snan and Shadashopachar Puja. According to the scriptures, it is due to this fasting that day that happiness, prosperity, and materialistic opulence are attained. In addition, problems in life disappear.
This year, confusion is arising in regard to the date of Durga Ashtami in the year 2024. As per the Panchang, Ashtami date for Shukla Paksha of the Ashwin month is going to start on 10th October 2024 at 12:35 pm and is going to conclude on 11 October 2024 at 12:05 pm. Hence, Ashtami Vrat in the year 2024 would be on 11th October. Saptami Vrat would be performed on 10th October and would be held separately from the Ashtami Vrat as per the aforementioned scriptures. The scriptures clearly indicate that Saptami and Ashtami fasts should not be maintained together. So, it would be more appropriate to hold Durga Ashtami Vrat on 11th October.
Importance of Durga Ashtami Vrat: Ashtami Vrat becomes very important on this particular day; Maa Bhagwati and kanya is especially worshiped. All the nine days of Navratri make Ashtami Vrat of the highest importance because, besides all, the Mahagauri form of Maa Durga is especially worshipped on this day. Apart from that, Kanya Pujan also takes place on this day which is believed to be highly auspicious for the Vrati. According to religious beliefs, fasting on this day and worshiping the girls usher happiness, prosperity, and affluence in life. This day also provides relief from planetary defects. This day is especially considered for relief from sufferings, attaining mental peace, etc.
Mahagauri is particularly worshiped on the day of Durga Ashtami. Mahagauri is one of the divine forms of Mother Parvati. She is worshiped as Shwetambardhara and Vrisharudha. She has four hands, out of which the right hand holds Abhaya Mudra and Trishul, and the left hand holds Damru and Vara Mudra. Worship of Mahagauri particularly destroys fear, obstacles and enemies.
Vratis can worship on Ashtami and Navami days. Once Navami is over, Dashami Tithi comes, and it is the most appropriate time to end the fast. On this particular day, Kanya Pujan and Vrat Paran bring peace and prosperity in the life of a person.
