Dhanteras is being celebrated on Trayodashi Tithi of Kartik month, two days prior to Diwali, that is on 29th Oct 2024 this year. The same day is also referred as “Dhan Trayodashi”, where ‘Dhan’ means wealth and prosperity and ‘Teras’ refers to the 13th day. This day is also considered auspicious from religious and cultural terms as here, people worship Lord Dhanvantri, Lakshmi Mata, and Kubera to bring happiness, prosperity, and health in the house.
According to this, on this day, all those things purchased bring prosperity and fortune to the house. On this day, new vehicles, property, and electronics can also be purchased. Items that are auspicious to be bought on Dhanteras are as follows: gold and silver, coriander seeds, and brooms. It is considered auspicious to buy gold, silver, utensils, and valuables on Dhanteras. Buying gold and silver increases the house wealth, while broom is that thing which brings happiness as well as prosperity to the house. Seeds of coriander bring financial benefit, while keeping it with one rupee coin is a symbol of prosperity.
The Dhanteras can be worshipped during Pradosh Kaal on 29 October from 5.38 pm till 8.13 pm. During this time, Lord Dhanvantri and Goddess Lakshmi are worshipped. The twilight period will be between 6.31 pm and 8.31 pm that is especially auspicious for worship.
Dhanteras has been dedicated to the care of cleanliness and decorations. Buying gold or silver or utensils is auspicious, along with worshiping Lord Dhanvantri and Lakshmi. Taking and giving loans on this day is considered inauspicious. The place of worship should be kept pure, and one should stay away from anger and negativity so that an atmosphere of happiness, peace, and prosperity remains in the family.
Dhanteras is related to the Samudra Manthan. According to the descriptions of that Samudra Manthan, it is said that numerous precious stones emerged from the churning. However, Dhanvantri Rishi was seen from one of the Kalash. He is the gurus of Ayurveda and getting his worship brings the boons of health and prolonged life. Goddess Lakshmi also was born at this time, so it is considered a symbol of wealth and prosperity.
Special bhog is also prepared in the worship of Dhanteras, with which Motichoor Laddu is a specialty sweet. It is auspicious and delectable so that people prepare it by their hand and present it before God.
This festival initiates Dhanteras and Govardhan Puja, and Bhai Dooj is also thrown into it. Kartik month is very special as during that period of time Lord Vishnu gets up, and during that time of the year, festivals like Devuthani Ekadashi and Tulsi Vivah also come.
