Bhai Dooj is a very special symbol of love and affection between brother and sister in Hinduism. This festival is celebrated on the second day of Shukla Paksha of Kartik month. There is a belief about Bhai Dooj that on this day Yamraj came to meet his sister Yamunaji, and Yamunaji fed him with respect. Yamraj was pleased and accepted this boon for the sister; he said that the brother and sister who will take the bath in Yamuna, worshipping on this day of Yam, will not need to go to Yamlok after death. That’s why this day’s significance has increased, and hence still today, people follow these same customs.
Bhai Dooj is a festival of brother-sister relationship like Rakshabandhan, but in this sisters apply tilak to their brother, do not tie Rakhi. This day is considered auspicious for the long life, happiness, prosperity and protection of the brother. On the day of Bhai Dooj, sisters apply tilak to their brother, perform aarti and feed sweets. Brothers complete this ritual by giving gifts to their sisters.
On Bhai Dooj, fruits, flowers, sandalwood, kumkum, rice and sweets are kept in the tilak plate. To apply tilak, the brother is made to sit on a stool and a red handkerchief is placed on his head. After this, the sisters apply tilak with kumkum or sandalwood on the brother’s forehead with the ring finger, sprinkle rice on it and then feed sweets and perform aarti.
This year, the festival of Bhai Dooj will be celebrated on November 3. Dwitiya Tithi will start at 8:21 pm on 2nd Nov and will end at 10:05 pm on 3rd Nov. So according to Udaya Tithi, Bhai Dooj will be celebrated on November 3. The good time for applying tilak on Bhai Dooj is between 1:10 pm to 3:22 pm.
It has also been said in the scriptures that Bhai Dooj has religious importance. Besides this, there is another mythological story according to which when Lord Krishna returned after killing the demon Narakasura, his sister Subhadra welcomed him with flowers, sweets and lamps. Subhadra applied tilak on Lord Krishna’s forehead and wished him a long life. Since then the tradition of celebrating the festival of Bhai Dooj started.
Bhai Dooj festival is the symbol of brother-sister love, and this festival is known by different names in different regions of India. With this festival, the five-day festival of Diwali ends.
