Grocery price changes between August and September 2024

The latest national Household Affordability Index by the Pietermaritzburg Economic Justice and Dignity (PMBEJD) shows that average grocery prices increased by 0,5% from August to September 2024. Rice and onions are among the foods that decreased in price, while bananas and tomatoes have seen a significant increase.

About the data

The PMBEJD collaborates with women living on low incomes to gather the data for their monthly Household Affordability Index.

These women are from Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban, Pietermaritzburg, Mtubatuba, and Springbok. The index is based on foods that women living in an average low-income household size would typically buy each month. They track food prices directly from the shelves of 47 supermarkets and 32 butcheries that target the low-income market. These include the ones that women identified as the ones they shop at in their areas.

Year-on-year, the cost of the average household food basket increased by R99,91 (1,9%).
